Traffic Lawyer Miami
Florida School Zone
If you are caught speeding in a school zone, the penalties are enhanced. Namely, the standard fines are doubled. It may be cost-effective to hire an attorney to fight such a ticket, because of the increased fines, the points against your Florida driver’s license, and the likely increase in your auto insurance rates.
The traffic ticket defense lawyers of Ferrer Shane, PL, are skilled at defending school zone speeding infractions, including excessive speed tickets for going at least 30 mph faster than the limit.
We handle all speeding tickets, representing clients cited in Miami-Dade County and surrounding counties of South Florida. Contact us today for a free initial consultation to learn how we can help get your ticket dismissed or reduced.
Speeding in a School Zone in Florida
With doubled penalties, speeding in a designated school zone results in the following fines:
- 1 to 9 mph over the limit: $50 (no warnings issued)
- 10 to 14 mph over: $200
- 15 to 19 mph over: $300
- 20 to 29 mph over: $350
- * 30 to 49 mph over: up to $500 on a first offense
- * 50 mph or more above the limit: $2,000 on a first offense
Speeding in a school zone counts 3 points against your license.
* These offenses are also subject to license suspension and a mandatory court appearance (in or out of a school zone). They also count 4 points against your license.
How do we challenge a school zone speeding ticket? First of all, the designated area is defined as a school zone only during certain hours of the morning and afternoon. (It’s not a school zone on weekends, on school holidays, at midnight — or even at lunchtime when the kids are presumably in their classrooms.) Secondly, the statute is very specific about the placement, visibility, and content of school zone signs. Thirdly, did the arresting officer actually clock you speeding within the boundaries of the school zone?
In addition, out attorneys are skilled at challenging speed measurement devices, statute mistakes, and other aspects of speed violations.
